All eyes on Silverstone!
After a thrilling start in Zhuhai, China, the FIA GT Championship will return to Europe, with the second round taking place at Silverstone, Great Britain, on May 5th – 6th.
For the third time, the overall winner will be awarded the historic Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy, which celebrated its centenary two years ago. Who will succeed the Aston Martin Racing DBR9 of Kox/ Lamy, and Bertolini/Bartels with the Vitaphone Racing Maserati MC12 in 2006, and have their names inscribed on the base, joining many illustrious drivers of the past ?
An exciting grid of up to thirty cars should line up for Sunday’s two-hour race – which will feature a very special guest – 1992 Formula One World Champion Nigel Mansell, who will be driving for Scuderia Ecosse in the nr 63 Ferrari 430 GT2 car. Other newcomers include four-times Le Mans winner Frank Biela, who will fill in for the absent Christophe Bouchut in the Zhuhai-winning All-Inkl.com Lamborghini Murciélago. 2007 GT2 Champion Jaime Melo of Brazil will also make a return, deputising for Stéphane Ortelli in the nr 51 AF Corse Motorola Ferrari 430 GT2.
This round will also include the first round of the Citation Cup for non-professional drivers; a grid of six cars will be present for this race-within-a-race.
This action-packed weekend also includes the first rounds of the 2007 FIA GT3 European Championship, with up to 11 different models of car taking part, including Ascari KZ1R, Aston Martin DBRS9, Corvette Z06, Dodge Viper Competition Coupe, Ferrari 430 Challenge GT3, Ford GT, Ford Mustang FR500 GT, Jaguar XKR GT3, Lamborghini Gallardo, Morgan Aero 8 and Porsche 997 GT3 Cup. The weekend will also feature the first-ever races in the GT4 European Cup. Based on the success of the FIA GT3 European Championship, this is a new category, for lighter, slightly less powerful cars, providing a perfect entry-level competition for GT racing.
Last, but definitely not least, GT racing will go back to its roots, with the very first round of the GT 90’s Revival Series. The weekend will include two 45-minute races for the magnificent GT cars of the last decade. With a grid of up to thirty cars, this is a wonderful opportunity to see the McLaren F1 GTR, Ferrari F40, Lotus Elise GT1, Porsche 911 GT1 and many, many others back in action ! The event will start off with the second London to Silverstone Supercar Tour, for modern supercars, likely to include a Koenigsegg and a Bugatti Veyron.
